Men – Personal Shoppers Are Your Ticket to Shopping Heaven!

Men – Personal Shoppers Are Your Ticket to Shopping Heaven!

Do any of these thoughts sound familiar?

A Personal Shopper will make me spend too much money.

I don’t care to shop, it’s a necessity, not play for me.

I feel a little overwhelmed when I get there.

My wife/girlfriend does it. I don’t get exactly what I want, but it’s better than doing it myself.

If any of these statements sounds like you, I’d like to tell you why you (yes You!) are the perfect candidate for personal shopping assistance. In one sentence: the less time, energy and money you want to devote to clothing procurement the more you need personal shopping.

That is because a good personal shopper will discuss your needs and personal style ahead of time, pull garments for you from the store and load up a reserved dressing room. He or she will then give opinions, exchange sizes and and help you build easy to grab outfits by going back out to the floor and re-choosing garments to harmonize with what you are creating inside.

There are different fee structures; at some stores they offer a free-to-you shopping service (rare in men’s though), but paid later to them by a commission of sales (can be uncomfortable). Some personal shoppers charge a flat fee and/or a percentage of sales. I charge hourly, because I think that is the most comfortable for the client and there is never any pressure to purchase one item over another, or go to one more expensive store over another. Your shopper should be as excited to find a good quality clothing piece on sale as you are.

If a “great” shopping experience sounds to you like making an appointment with someone who knows you, at the store of your (not her) choice, and just showing up to a fully stocked dressing room, to then be attended to like royalty as she scurries hither and yon selecting the best of the best for you – then you are starting to see the magic allure to personal shopping that so many men love. And it’s even more icing on the cake that the person picking the items is a trained professional – great looks plus getting it done efficiently is just the ticket!…

The Best Free Browser Toolbars

The Best Free Browser Toolbars

A free browser toolbar is a great way to customize your internet browsing experience with the features and tools that you want and that are tailored to the way that you use the internet, rather than the general tools and buttons that come as standard on your browser.

It doesn’t matter what browser that you currently have, whether it is the most popular Microsoft Internet Explorer that usually comes already installed when you buy a PC computer, or if you have installed Firefox, safari, chrome or any of the other choices that there are. There are many hundreds of great toolbars out there that you can get for every one of them, and all of the best ones will work with all of them anyway – automatically detecting which one you have and using the right version when you click to install.

Although as I have said there are many hundreds available of all different kinds, there are four main types that are very popular. As I can’t write about everything in this one article I will focus on these. The first type are for developer tools, aimed at people who make websites or write software. I am assuming that this kind of person will already know everything about this subject and what they need and so will not be reading this article, so I’ll put those to one side. The second types is for games. That can mean that they are for specific games and are aimed at people who already play them, or just to add easy access to free games to your toolbar. If you are a games fan I suggest that you think about what kind of games you like to play and then do a Google search for ‘….. games toolbar’ to find something you might like.

The third type are shopping toolbars. These can give you all sorts of tools for getting cheap deals on the things that you buy. The Bookmarked By Us Toolbar, for example, has a price comparison search box, a button to turn on ‘on-page visual shopping’ price comparison (see resource box for more info on exactly what that is) and a social shopper feature for sharing your favorite bargain finds and seeing what deals are most popular with the community.

The fourth type are social bookmark toolbar, which let you easily share links to your favorite pages and see what is popular elsewhere. has one of the most popular ones, or you can also get them with universal tools for sharing on any social bookmarks website.…

Vintage Clothing Shopping Advice – Ten Tips For New Collectors of Vintage Fashions

Vintage Clothing Shopping Advice – Ten Tips For New Collectors of Vintage Fashions

The demand for high quality, stylish vintage clothing is increasing and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon.

After many years of collecting vintage clothing for myself and also purchasing inventory for my vintage fashion business, I’m very aware of how the supply is steadily dwindling. This has resulted in increased prices, especially for vintage designer clothing and period garments in the best wearable condition.   So, if you’re new to collecting vintage fashions,  I’ve put together my top ten tips to help you spend your money wisely and  become a more savvy vintage shopper.

1. TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS   The first thing you should do before your next shopping trip is to get yourself a tape measure and take your own measurements. This is especially helpful if you’re planning to purchase vintage clothes online as the garment measurements are always included in the description of the item. Very often items are not returnable or there are restocking fees to send things back.  By knowing your measurements, you’ll easily be able to compare them to the item you wish to purchase, thus ensuring proper fit.  Also, keep a tape measure in your purse so you’ll have it handy to measure items you may find while out shopping that you can’t try on.

2. KNOW YOUR ERAS   Read all you can about vintage fashion to help you identify the distinctive style characteristics of specific eras. Books on fashion history, vintage fashion magazines and catalogs and even internet searches will unearth a wealth of information.

3. KNOW YOUR BODY TYPE     Determine which era has a style most enhancing to your specific body shape. That way you won’t be investing in vintage clothing that will sit unworn in your closet because it doesn’t flatter you.

4.FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH COLLECTIBLE DESIGNER LABELS   Though it happens infrequently,  vintage dresses do get misrepresented by having designer labels sewn into them to  extract a higher  price. So it helps to familiarize yourself with collectible designers’ styles and their labels. The Vintage Fashion Guild has an online designer label resource that is a very helpful reference.  Buying from a reputable dealer also ensures you’re getting what you paid for.

5. INSPECT CAREFULLY   Mint condition vintage clothing, especially unworn stock, is very rare. So most collectors expect vintage garments to show some evidence of previous wear  Many online sellers divulge all condition issues in the descriptions of their vintage clothes. So you know ahead of time what you’re getting. In a brick and mortar store, vintage clothing show or flea market you’ll need to get next to a good light source with your vintage apparel,  as most items are sold as is. If you later discover a flaw you can’t live with , you probably won’t be able to return it.

6.CHECK FOR STAINS/FADING AND FABRIC DISCOLORATION   Unless your vintage find is really inexpensive and you want to experiment with  stain removal, don’t consider purchasing anything with noticeable stains, especially at the underarm areas. Most older stains are permanently set.

7. TAKE A WHIFF   Smoke or perspiration odor usually won’t come out of vintage clothing unless it’s a washable fabric that can be soaked. Dry cleaning usually doesn’t remove these odors.

8. LOOK FOR  TEARS AND HOLES    Vintage wool sweaters and suits are prone to moth damage. A couple of inconspicuous mothbites are ok, but reweaving can be quite expensive. So you might want to pass up something with numerous moth holes.  Vintage dresses can also have holes or tears. If they’re large enough that they’ll still be very noticeable even with expert repairs, then leave it on the rack .  Seams that need a bit of restitching or tiny holes that get lost in the folds of a skirt are acceptable.

9. DETERMINING AUTHENTICITY   With so much modern clothing that is inspired by vintage styles, you’ll want to be sure you’re about to purchase an authentic piece of vintage clothing.  Experience is certainly the best teacher.   But here’s a short list to start with. Details that may indicate a garment is over  40 years old are metal zippers, snap closures in the side of vintage dresses, all blue text on union labels, pinked seams and bias hem tape. Older clothing will not have a “Made in China” label. The most common country of origin label you’re apt to see in  pre 1980 vintage apparel is  Hong Kong, Italy , France  or USA.

10. THE QUESTION OF CLEANING

No matter how much you love your latest vintage find, if it’s going to be a hassle to clean then you may not want to add it to your collection. Ask the seller/dealer how or if the piece of vintage clothing you’re …

Shop Till You Drop in Jeddah!

Shop Till You Drop in Jeddah!

For those of you who don’t know it, Jeddah is a shopper’s paradise! Reputed to have over 90 shopping centres (or “malls”, as they are commonly known), with new locations currently under construction, it is a popular destination for Saudis and expats alike, as well as for the millions of pilgrims arriving in the city each year to visit Mecca. A bustling commercial centre located on the Red Sea coast, Jeddah boasts a population of approximately 3.2 million. It’s no wonder, then, that shopping is so popular in a country where cinemas, theatres and discotheques have no place. From wealthy designer goods to everyday high street stores (and everything in-between), Jeddah has it all! With so much retail choice, however, it can be difficult to know exactly where to go for the best shopping experience. Naturally, having only lived in the city for eight months, I still have some way to go before I can claim to have visited even a significant proportion of Jeddah’s malls. But I’m certainly doing my best to fit as much “exploring” as I can into my busy schedule and I’d like to share my experiences with you.

Two of the biggest shopping centres are the Red Sea Mall and the Mall of Arabia, the latter being one of my favourites. To give you an idea of their size, let’s just say that the Red Sea Mall has 18 entrances, 4000 parking spaces and three floors of shops, restaurants and entertainment facilities, as well as a 5-star hotel and 7-storey office building attached to it. My favourite stores here are the Virgin Megastore and the Danube hypermarket, which has a great selection of non-food items as well as a good range of international foods on offer. The Mall of Arabia, meanwhile, is Jeddah’s largest shopping centre with 330 stores and three floors of shops, restaurants and entertainment facilities including an ice skating rink. Being one of the newer developments, it is modern and light and easy to get around due to its circular design. It is also home to a few of my favourite shops, such as Boots the Chemist (the only one I know of in Jeddah!), Ziddy (kids clothing), Desigual (kids and adults designer clothing from Spain) and Gap Kids.

Being so big, both of these shopping centres have the advantage of remaining open between 1 P.M. and 5 P.M. (most shops in Saudi Arabia being closed between these times). It is fair to say, however, that only the larger stores within these centres will remain open during this time, the smaller ones reopening at 5 P.M. On a smaller scale, Stars Avenue is a wonderful discovery only five minutes away from our home. Whilst a number of its stores are a little out of my price range (Saks Fifth Avenue, for one!), it does have a few decent-priced stores such as Mango and New Look and recently opened a new branch of Manuel, one of my favourite supermarkets which has a very good selection of imported European foods. Goodies, the Lebanese chain of restaurants/delicatessens, also deserves a special mention for its quality food at reasonable prices, as does Little Book for its selection of English-language children’s books.

Another recent discovery is the newly completed Haifa Mall. When I visited it about three months ago, it was so new that only two-thirds of the stores had opened for business. What struck me most about the place – other than the smell of disinfectant and its resemblance to the Mall of Arabia (having been developed by the same company) – was the selection of shops and facilities. There were a number of stores that I had rarely or never come across before in Jeddah, such as F&F (Tesco’s first clothing store in Saudi Arabia), and a Billy Beez soft playground for kids, the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia. Conveniently located on one floor, this place definitely deserves another visit! For something totally different, you could head downtown to the Balad district, where the real hustle and bustle is to be found. It can be extremely busy here, however, so mornings may be a good option as they are generally quieter. The Corniche Commercial Center is made up of many small shops selling a wide range of products from perfumes to electronics and souvenirs. Unlike some of the other, more upmarket shopping centres, it is a good place to purchase gifts to bring back home such as Saudi t-shirts and mugs. Bargains can also be had in the shoe department and there is a great Star supermarket selling a wide range of Filipino foods as well as non-food items.

Naturally, this is just a small selection of what I believe Jeddah has to offer in terms of …
